How I created my Digital Humanities Project!

Hello everyone! In today’s blog post, I will be creating a breakdown of how I created my Digital Humanities project. First, I had to decide what I wanted to write about and it is important to find a topic that you find interesting. Since the pandemic has been going on I remember another pandemic which was the Black Death. I remember when I learned about this in high school I found it to be very interesting. This project contributes to digital humanities because it is a historical time period that relates to today in different aspects. In other words, the historical significance of the Black Death was it had killed millions of people and animals worldwide in its entirety. I feel this project I have created can be expanded on because back when the Black Death started the people had to quarantine and wear masks. Like today during Covid-19, we must stay 6 feet from each individual along with wearing masks. This project is interactive with people because I want you to explain your experiences when going through such a hard time. Since we have to stay home how did you quarantine?

Secondly, when researching my project I used a history textbook I ordered online which was Worlds Together, Worlds Apart, by Robert L. Tignor, W.W. Norton, and Company, 2018. Although some people may not have access to textbooks there are alternate solutions such as for example this website The black death: A timeline of the gruesome pandemic. Throughout researching this topic I have expanded my learning and digital humanities skills to find the right information I needed. Thirdly, the tool I used to create my project was PowerPoint, and when creating a PowerPoint it’s good to make each slide not too long. The project I would say gives a well-informed but yet interesting to viewers who would like to get more information about the Black Death. I also included photos and citations of where I got my facts from. The significance of using photos is to give a better representation of what I am trying to prove. Along with always showing citations, it shows you are not plagiarizing and giving credit to the original author. If I had more access to more tools I would have created an entire website page about why it is important to learn about history in particular the Black Death.  I want my work to be accessible and useful to people of all ages. Overall I am proud of the work I have created and I feel it is easy to understand if someone had no background knowledge of this topic.

My personal favorite aspects of my project would be in particular the comparison of masks as shown in the photo down below. This is one slide from my project and you can check out the entire project on my Blog page under The Black Death. You can see the difference and similarities between the masks from the fourteenth century and now. Another photo on the bottom of this page is a chart I found statistically showing which mask is best to wear.  I highly recommend you creating your own project about something you are passionate about.

Learn about Oral History!

Hello everyone! In today’s blog post I will be discussing oral history. You may ask yourself “what is oral history?” Well, oral history can have different meanings but the definition is the collection and study of historical information using sound recordings of interviews with people having personal knowledge of past events. Oral history plays a big part in history because instead of reading the information provided it can be helpful but listening to someone describe the past events gives you a better understanding. You can hear the person's tone of voice of the interviewer and the interviewee and hear how they feel about the questions being asked. An example of oral history is you can look at is the Stanford Historical Society's Oral History Program . These stories are public and they explain the history of the University. This collection had over a hundred projects with audio and some with transcripts. This website I have fo...

Meet the face behind the post!

Hello! My name is Vanessa Klein and I am nineteen years old. I am half Puerto Rican and half Italian. I am currently a sophomore and Criminal Justice major at St. Francis College. Since that has happened it changed my life and it has impacted my decisions I make today.  I really enjoy traveling and one of my favorite places I have been to is Aruba in the Caribbean. I love taking little road trips with my family to Atlantic City and Cape May in New Jersey. This is the first time I am creating a blog and I am so excited. My blog is going to be fun and exciting in different ways to learn a lot of new things. I want my blog to be original and to look like no other so when you (the reader) log...

Learn About Archives With Me!

Hi everyone! In today’s entry, I will be discussing archives. When I first started searching for an archive it’s important to find one that is interesting to you. At first, I had no idea what an archive was and I have never done anything like it before. Once I started to get a glimpse of archives, I started by typing in “National Archives” into Google to find a broad variety of different ones. You may ask yourself what is an archive? An archive online can be a visual representation of a collection of historical documents or records including information about a place, institution, or group of people. Although a conventional archive may not be, in this case, I will be discussing online archives.  There are many ways to create different archives and as you may know,  if you read my about me post "meet the face behind the post" I am a Criminal Justice major. I enjoy learning about things related to that. So I ended up find a Nation Archive of Crim...
